Sandra Thompson Smith, Ph.D.

Dr. Sandra Thompson Smith, a native of Miami, Florida, is an educator, administrator, researcher, and Response Scoring Professional (RSP). Dr. Thompson Smith holds a bachelor's degree from Voorhees College (now University), a master’s degree from Fisk University, and a doctorate degree from the University of Florida. She also holds a certificate in French, from the Universite de Poitier (LaRochelle, France), and a certificate in Higher Education Leadership from Harvard University.

Dr. Thompson Smith gratefully enjoyed a stellar career of over 30 at Florida Memorial University (FMU). During her tenure at FMU she served as a professor, Associate Provost, Provost, Interim President (2009-2011), and Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness. She retired from FMU in 2012, but it was at FMU where she developed her lifelong mantra “Every student matters!” She has worked with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Florida Reading Corps, the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) program, and the Educational Testing Services (ETS). Thompson Smith has also worked with a host of renown tutoring services including: The Huntington Learning Center, Varsity Tutors, and the Jump Start Tutoring Center.

Dr. Thompson Smith has received, and appreciates, all the numerous civic, academic, and faith-based community awards she has received. This includes having been named one of South Florida’s Women of Impact (2010), and The National Association of Professional Women (NAPW) Woman of the Year (2011/2012). Also, she was inducted into Voorhees College’s Hall of Fame, Class of 2020. Dr. Thompson Smith truly believes “To whom much is given, much is required.”

She is a wife and a mother, a member of Greater Mount Pleasant AME Church, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and serves on Kinad Inc.’s Board of Directors, as well as a host of other community-based organizations. Additionally, Dr. Sandra Thompson Smith serves as a member, and President of the Piney Grove Academy’s Board of Directors.
